Linda King, Certified Hypnotherapist & Past Life Regression Therapist
If you’ve ever thought about the possibility of reincarnation, which involves the soul being on a journey from one lifetime to another, you would be in good company. In fact, three-quarters of the world’s religions believes the soul lives on after we die.
Even though I was raised in the Lutheran faith, I had quite an unconventional belief system when it came to life after death. My paternal grandmother, Nama, was a psychic medium and held seances quite frequently. I asked to sit in on them when I was only five. Since she knew I wasn’t afraid and was quite a curious child, she said, “Yes, of course.” I saw many strange things happen during those sessions, such as her antique oak table lifting up on one side, baskets of fruit rising up, curtains flowing, candles flickering, gentle touches on my arm and several apparitions. I knew Nama was able to contact those that had passed on, so there MUST be life after you die, right? This didn’t necessarily explain reincarnation though.
Being an avid reader, I started reading about reincarnation at the age of 11. My first book on the subject was “The Search for Bridey Murphy” which was about a hypnotic regression of a Colorado housewife who recalled a life in Ireland in the 19th century. Fascinating story. Next, I read “Edgar Cayce on Reincarnation”, and many more books were to follow.
As a child, I felt a pain in my mouth, mainly around my teeth, anytime I heard metal scraping against cement or stone. I always felt it was connected to a past life. I still don’t have all the answers about this particular event, but I sense it has something to do with chains and possibly a dungeon.
At the age of 16, I experienced my first past life recall when my friend, Freida, asked me to “hold on a few minutes” while I was on the phone with her. I must have gone into an altered state of self-hypnosis, as a whole scene played out before my eyes. I was a young woman of 28, in a red dress, business attire actually, getting into a car that appeared to be around 1940. I was hit by another car and killed instantly. I recognized the streets in the city I grew up in, but the businesses had all changed. A very interesting experience and many more would follow.
The Benefits of Past Life Regression Therapy
The majority of my hypnotherapy clients that undergo a past life therapy regression are curious to find out if they have had a past life with their spouse or family member, or perhaps had lived in a certain area of the world. Maybe they have had a fascination with Asian art or Irish customs all their lives. Is there a connection?
I usually guide people into three past lives during a session. They may want to find out if they lived during the Victorian era and instead find they were a Native American hunter, a young girl living on the plains in the mid-West and a Buddhist monk. The clients open the doors of their choosing; I believe they go where they need to go to explore. Sometimes they may change the tone of their voice, speak with an accent or come with names, dates and towns or cities.
Besides finding about the time period, place, the sex and age of the person and how they met their death, we also take a look at challenges that person faced during their lifetime, as well as what lessons they were working on up until they died.
Connections in This Lifetime
Were there any people in their former life they recognize as being in their current life? Oftentimes, we will go through lifetimes with the same souls. In fact, according to the late Dr. Michael Newton, who was a leading authority on Life-Between-Lives Therapy, we tend to migrate in our lifetimes within our “soul families”. Perhaps your mother in this lifetime was your sister or brother in a past life. Your spouse could have played a significant role in the past as your teacher or father.
Underlying Causes of Current Fears and Phobias
Many people may develop a phobia or fear based on events that happened in a past life. For example, if someone is extremely fearful of the water and has been as far back as they can remember, it’s quite possible they drowned in a past life. Claustrophobia, fear of heights, being alone or in dark places often have their roots in past lifetimes.
Explaining Current Medical or Health Conditions
With most health conditions, persons may be able to go to a past life where they first experienced a similar problem or issue and discover on conscious and subconscious levels, that the condition is from a former life. Often, just the knowledge that it is from the past is enough to release it. The symptoms just seem to go away on their own. In other cases, doing additional healing work may be necessary.
Ten years ago, a woman 60 years old, I’ll call “Dee”, had a severe case of trigeminal neuralgia, a condition which can cause excruciating jolts of pain through the face. We uncovered two different lifetimes where she had experienced facial pain. In one, she had been a peasant, or slave, who lived when Jesus was being carried to the cross and had been kicked severely in the face. In a more recent lifetime, her abusive husband was chronically beating her and eventually killed her. After her session, the pain lessened considerably, but would still surface from time to time. Yes, it is possible she had additional lifetimes with trauma to the face.
If you starved to death in a past life, you may overeat in this one. In regression therapy, it can be extremely helpful for the client to work through chronic obesity issues, in addition to a current plan of action to take in this lifetime, i.e. eating smaller portions, chewing slower, exercising and meal planning.
I believe that oftentimes we are inflicted with different medical issues so that we may learn “life lessons”, such as patience, forgiveness, or discovering what’s really important in life from having these conditions. It’s part of our Dharma, our life purpose, this time around. Some people feel that we experience karma in our various lifetimes — “What goes around, comes around”. If a person is born deaf, maybe they didn’t listen to people in their last lifetime. If a person is mistreated, maybe they mistreated others in a past life.
When a person believes that everything doesn’t end when we die, it can change our perspective on dealing with death. Persons having near-death experiences (NDE’s) and out-of-body experiences(OBE’s) know that there are other dimensions, planes or realms. Experiencing past life regressions help us understand that we live again and again. When we understand that we will see our loved ones after we die, it can ease the pain of losing a loved one.
Uncover the Sources of Relationship Issues
Some people believe we have one soulmate; perhaps we actually have many over the course of our lifetimes. If a person continually seems to be choosing the wrong mate in their life, it often has roots in a past life. Uncovering past life history can shed light on what is truly happening in a relationship: jealousy, rage, selfishness, poor parenting, etc.
Discover Hidden Talents and Abilities
It is quite possible to carry over “gifts” from one life to another. This may explain young child prodigies who play classical piano before the age of five or can paint, play chess, solve incredible mathematical problems, sports or who may be gifted at inventing things. Mozart was composing music at the age of three, right? If you find a past life talent and desire to try it in this lifetime, go for it–it should come easy for you.
Different Avenues for Accessing Your Past Lives
Past life regression with hypnosis is not your only source for discovering your past lives. Many people have recurring dreams or visions during meditation. Some people may examine clues on a conscious level. Others will have readings through psychic mediums or oracles, who have been divinely gifted. Do what feels right for you; perhaps choosing to do a combination of different methods.
