Our society does not truly understand what health care is. Many think that health care for babies revolves around “wellness” visits that are covered by insurance. Unfortunately, insurance pays for sick care. True health care is not paid for by insurance. In my practice at the Active Chiropractic Wellness Center, I educate parents about important aspects of real health care that will impact their child’s life.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is an important aspect of true health care because getting adjusted at that time is 2 for the price of 1! The baby gets more oxygen and a richer blood supply during an adjustment. Mothers receive the benefit of pelvic stability and less restrictions on the uterus ligaments. Therefore, the baby has less restrictions to its forming cranium, spine and extremities. The mother’s nervous system has less interference allowing better baby development. Note that visiting a Chiropractor that has certifications from Webster or Bagnell is the most important, and no pregnant woman should be turned on her side and adjusted in a side posture.
Chiropractic care is safe and gentle for pregnant women, so don’t avoid it during this time. You just need to make sure your Chiropractor has special equipment to accommodate growing bellies. Some Chiropractors have specific techniques for different symptoms felt during pregnancy like heartburn, morning sickness, headaches, carpal tunnel, breech babies, symphysis pubis dysfunction, sciatica, constipation, low back pain, swollen ankles and feet and Bell’s Palsy. Chiropractic care has also been shown to decrease labor time, reduce the need for pain medication, decrease the potential need for interventions and help reduce the incidence of the new mother getting postpartum depression. It is beneficial during pregnancy and childbirth for the mom.
After birth, getting the baby checked by a Chiropractor that understands infant techniques is imperative because the nervous system controls everything in the body. Getting the spine and cranium adjusted is a perfect start because babies go through quite a lot during birth. Symmetry of the eyes and skull, head tilt, anterior to posterior line of the body, lateral line of the body and forward translation of the body should all be observed by the Chiropractor. In addition, chiropractors may help with breastfeeding issues, colic, teething acid reflux, ear infections, promoting a healthy immune system, lip and tongue tie and reducing meningeal stress.
Pharmaceutical use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is a controversial subject among many. The use of NanoEnhanced Hemp oil in our office at the Active Chiropractic Wellness Center has proven a fabulous alternative for many issues, including depression, pain, high blood pressure, stress and anxiety. We also use methylated nutrition, homeopathy, herbals, and a ketone drink, all safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding. The use of ketones has been proven to help in getting pregnant, reducing inflammation, PCOS and endometriosis, to name a few. During pregnancy the use of ketones/fat instead of glucose/carbohydrates has proven to reduce morning sickness, food aversions and nausea.
Keep in mind a balance of food while pregnant is important, so no fasting or weight loss is the goal. Women who are pregnant achieve ketosis faster than non-pregnant women. (Ketosis is a normal metabolic process. When the body does not have enough glucose for energy, it burns stored fats instead; this results in a build-up of acids called ketones within the body. Some people encourage ketosis by following a diet called the ketogenic or low-carb diet.) This is found after sleeping, before breaking the fast. Ketosis is a natural state for the body, making sure to do it safely during pregnancy is important. Interestingly enough, breast milk is ketogenic.
