Understanding your Nervous Systems
If you ask any western doctor about the nervous system, he or she will tell you about the central nervous system (your brain and spinal cord) and autonomic nervous system (parasympathetic and sympathetic branches). We think of the parasympathetic nervous system as the rest and digest part and the sympathetic as “fight or flight”. But, recent research has shown that we have a third part of our nervous system called the Social Nervous System. This part of the nervous system controls the muscles of your eyes, jaw, and is involved in being aware of your environment and present moment awareness. When all three are regulated, then we are able to easily deal with stress and overwhelming experiences.
My Car Accident and Nervous System Overload
Many years ago when I was learning to drive, I got into a few car accidents. There’s one that I’ll never forget. I was lost, made a left hand turn on a green light and was hit by a van on my passenger side that was part of oncoming traffic. We pulled into a parking lot and I went inside to a store to call my parents. My heart was beating rapidly, my palms sweaty, and my hands were shaking as I picked up the phone.
Afterwards, I thought I was going to be fine. I was wrong. In the years to come, I suffered from terrible anxiety anytime I was asked to drive. The physical impact of the car accident, contacting my parents and dealing with insurance left my nerves a wreck. To my friends and family I appeared normal, but inside I suffered from constant anxiety and my body was stuck in the past. I never got a chance to discharge all of that nervous energy that built up in my body due to this event. I needed a gentle approach to help me heal.
