In March, Whole Foods Market announced that the company will require all genetically engineered (GE) foods on its shelves to be labeled by 2018. It is the first national grocery chain to make such a move.

Whole Foods Market already has 3,300 products that are not genetically engineered, more than any other retailer in North America. Now it is taking an additional step. By 2018, any food sold in Whole Foods Markets in U.S. and Canada that contains genetically engineered ingredients will be labeled as such. This includes meat that was fed genetically engineered feed; way beyond what any other nation requires for GE labeling. The five-year time line allows for the fact that the vast majority of field corn, soybeans and canola seed grown in the U.S. comes from genetically engineered seeds.

Environmental Working Group predicts that Whole Foods Market’s announcement will bring immediate changes from many of its suppliers. They also stated that Whole Foods’ announcement is a game-changer for federal and state labeling initiatives.
